Clairvoyant Notion (2024, Grade 4)

$76.99

ca. 4’22’’ • solos: tenor, guitar • 2024

required doubles: none

Weather forecasting is a lot about predicting the future, and having a certain level of “clairvoyance.” Additionally, much like improvising in the jazz idiom, the job of presenting the weather live is quite an improvisatory task at times.

Clairvoyant Notion is inspired by groove-driven artists like The Rippingtons, Spyro Gyra, and Pat Metheny (who all have, at different points, accompanied scrolling radar maps and extended-forecast tables), taking that familiar essence and distilling it into something digestible for developing ensembles.

Clairvoyant Notion is a love letter to the skies above—it captures the vastness of a clear blue day, the introspection of an overcast morning, and the electrifying rush of a storm rolling in.

Commissioned by the Gates-Chili High School Jazz Ensemble; Chris Oldfield, director
